Welcome Back! For a couple of weeks all of 6th-8th grades will work on the Foundations of Geometry. This will be a good spiral review for 7th and 8th, while there may be new concepts for 6th grade. Then each grade will have its own level of solving for perimeter, area, volume and surface area. These basics of geometry will come up in standardized assessments throughout their educational careers and we want to provide them with the vocabulary to attack geometry questions with confidence. We will be using mathantics.com for some video lessons and then some small packets I put together for independent practice. Feel free to check out the website. I appreciate this teacher's thorough nature of teaching, along with his graphics and attention grabbing examples!

3/14-3/17
Happy Pi Day to all! Well, we actually did not get to celebrate it yet, because I was out for a family funeral, but I promised the students we would make up this day with some activities and pie in a few weeks when we get going into 4th quarter! Wow! I can't believe it is already here, but it is and this next few days is crunch time for turning in missing assignments. If your child has been ill or missed an assignment, I will take them up until Monday for getting my grades entered for 3rd quarter. If you see an incomplete grade, it means your child is still working on make-ups. We have had a rough few weeks with illness. I hope you enjoy your long weekend! See you all Monday! We will have our ACSI team in the building Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Welcome them if you see them! :)
3/7-3/11
This week will be catch-up week for missing or absent assignments. Grades are due next Thursday so I have asked for everything by Wednesday, March 16th. I will be grading all I have tonight and letting the students know where they stand as far as missing or redo work needed. We will finish chapter 4 in a few days and begin a review. The students seem to be enjoying graphing and also seem to be picking it up fairly well considering it is a new idea to them. Some of the work we are doing is "above and beyond" and I am proud of their enthusiasm for learning new and challenging material!

This week we will dig into Chapter 4 which includes graphing with tables, defining functions and graphing functions. We are moving to a plan where we will use the packet in class and do more homework in the book at home. 2/8-2/11
I apologize for not having anything for this week, but when I tried to log in, my computer was kicking me off because it came up as a security threat. The site did say they were working to change a few things, so now it seems fine. Hopefully your children kept you updated during the week.
We mostly worked on notes for adding and subtracting fractions and mixed numbers. We also attempted 3.8 and 3.9 on those topics. I tried to collect packets but once I looked at the pile realized some students did not put names on them or even turn them in. I will return the ones I received and get names on the rest. We will regroup Tuesday and set up a quiz time for these concepts. Please continue to use the website or book as references.
2/1-2/5
This week we will complete decimal review and solve equations with decimals. We reviewed one-step equations on Monday and Tuesday and will apply them on Thursday with decimal equations. Wednesday we reviewed dividing with decimals in the divisor and the need to move the decimal point. This was the only thing on the quiz that was a consistent problem for students. I returned the quizzes on Wednesday and spoke with certain students to see me for redo's. I am just meeting with the last group of students about the Test for Chapter 2 redo's Wednesday.

Assessments: Quiz on solving with decimals on Friday. (We have reviewed in class)
1/25-1/29
This week we will work on more corrections from the Chapter 2 Test. The scores on this test did not reflect much preparation, for the most part. Very few students showed mastery on these review topics. I am going to be asking the students what prep time was put into the test and get back with you individually to let you know what may help in the future for your child. Each child was given a practice test that was identical to the real test with different numbers. These practice tests are very helpful if reviewed. Students will be allowed to study again and review before re-taking this test. They will have to set up a time other than regular class time (usually during 9th hour PE) to retake the test. We will be moving on to Chapter 3 this week, which is a review of fractions and decimals.
Videos on go.hrw.com/gopages/ma-al.html (use Holt 2 2007 version of Middle School Math) are helpful as well as reading the section in the book before attempting the work. You should all have a book at home for your reference.
Homework:
Monday: 3.2 and 3.3 in packet ( a review of adding, subtracting and multiplying decimals)
Tuesday: none (We talked about test scores and review/redo ideas)
Wednesday: 3.4 2,6 (we will begin in class) dividing decimals
Thursday: Study 3.1-3.5 in book or online with videos for Quiz review tomorrow
Friday: Review of Decimals (Quiz on Monday)
Assessments: Quiz on Decimals-Monday 2/1 This quiz is not over word problems, but just traditional decimal algorithms. Line up decimals for adding and subtracting, count decimals for multiplication and move decimal point over in the answer, always divide by a whole number by moving decimal in divisor and dividend if necessary. There will be extra credit on solving with decimals which is section 3.6.
1/18-1/22
This week, we will review Ch 2 and take a test Thursday. We had to move the test because not everyone had completed the review on Tuesday. We reviewed Wednesday and will spend time taking the test Thursday and looking at corrections on Friday. New chapter on Monday! :) Preview Chapter 3 over the weekend on-line or in the book. We will be using Word Problem sheets for Chapter 3 since it is a review of fraction and decimal operations. Word Problems will take the practice to an application level and show the students "why we need this. " :) Enjoy the Homecoming events Thursday and Friday night! Your dress up days have been fun to watch!

Assessments:
Wed: Quiz 2.1-2.3 +/- integers
Friday: Quiz: 2.4 x/ integers
Special Notes:
*There are very few grades so far (this can affect a grade at the beginning of a quarter) and a few students need to work on redoing sections 1.8 and 1.9 quizzes/retrying questions on the test to gain some understanding and regain some points. Please review those things at home with the website if your child falls into that category. We are reviewing at school, but looking again at the website may help as well.
*Please emphasize to your child the importance of showing all work possible, even if a separate sheet of paper is necessary. Many did not do this on the test review and it resulted in a loss of points. When students circle an answer with no work shown, I can't know if they are ready for a test. In our class, we need to be able to analyze and correct mistakes to gain mastery and that is not possible without showing work. Thank you for your support!
11/23-24
Happy Thanksgiving! We are going to make the most of these two days. We began chapter 2 today and we will complete it tomorrow as well as look at some notes on 2.2.
